The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) oversees the development of regional forest management standards; offers resources and training around FSC certification; and raises awareness of FSC certification and the benefits of using FSC-certified products.
Principles and Criteria for forest management set the threshold for defining good forest management around the world. However, regional standards must also be developed to reflect local ecological, social and economic factors while adhering to FSC Principles and Criteria. For this reason, FSC supports the development of regional standards for use in certification assessments in that region.
FSC Canada convenes representatives of all four Chambers (Aboriginal Peoples, Economic, Environmental, Social) to develop regional forest management standards that represent the ecology and social circumstances of a particular geographical area.
In Canada there are four regional forest management standards:
FSC Canada provides learning resources and delivers training workshops to improve the understanding and implementation of FSC certification in Canada. Resources are in the form of fact sheets, presentations, and online information and can all be found in our Resources Centre.
As a voluntary and market-based mechanism for responsible forest management, FSC certification depends on there being both a supply and demand of FSC-certified products. FSC Canada hosts workshops, attends tradeshows and conferences, builds partnerships, and initiate projects which support the market for FSC-certified products.
